About Bases & Places

An independent relocation guide for military families, built on official data.

Bases & Places is an independent guide that answers the first questions every military family asks when PCS orders arrive: where do people live, what will housing cost, and which schools are good near this base. We cover 130+ major U.S. installations across all service branches.

Where our data comes from

  • BAH rates are the official 2026 figures from the U.S. Department of Defense, Defense Travel Management Office (DTMO), covering every military housing area and pay grade. We cite the source on every base page and in the BAH calculator.
  • Neighborhoods, rents, and home prices are typical local market ranges compiled from public real estate and Census data, meant to orient families, not to price a specific home.
  • Schools are drawn from public school-district information near each base.

How we keep it accurate

BAH is refreshed annually when the DoD publishes new rates each January. Each base guide shows a "last updated" date, and figures are checked against the official DoD source before publishing. Where a number is a market estimate rather than an official figure, we say so.

How we stay independent

The site is free because of advertising, affiliate links, and connecting families with moving and insurance providers (see our disclosure). That never changes the housing, BAH, or neighborhood information we publish. We are not a real estate brokerage and do not take real estate referral fees.
